Dr. Jennifer Andruchow

Dr. Andruchow is a Royal College of Surgeons of Canada certified General Surgeon. She completed three years of a Bachelor of Sciences Degree and was granted early acceptance to the University of Alberta Medical School. After receiving her Medical Degree, she was accepted into the University of Alberta General Surgery residency. Following the 5 year residency, she moved to Sydney, Australia to train in a Head and Neck fellowship where she expanded her interest in surgery of the thyroid.

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Andruchow moved to St Albert to start her career as a staff General Surgeon at the Sturgeon Hospital. During her time there, she acted as Medical Student coordinator for over 10 years. She was the Site Lead for General Surgery for 6 years and she is currently the Facility Site Chief of Surgery. Of note, she spearheaded the Surgical Care Team which provides a novel approach to surgery care in the Edmonton Zone.

Her practice is focused on:
– surgical thyroid disease
– breast cancer
Her practice also includes:
– screening endoscopy
– gallbladder and hernia surgery

She sees patients with a variety of surgical thyroid issues such as thyroid cancer, symptomatic goitres, Grave’s disease, symptomatic/concerning thyroid nodules. She collaborates with the University of Alberta Endocrine group and attends Thyroid meetings both nationally and internationally to ensure she stays up to date.

She is a member of the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program (CBCP). She participates in the Multidisciplinary Breast Rounds which ensures complicated breast cancer patients have a multidisciplinary plan of care with consensus among colleagues. She regularly attends national and international meetings to stay up to date on the latest breast cancer care and surgical techniques. She employs oncoplastic techniques which blend cancer care with better cosmetic outcomes.

She is a proud member of the St Albert community and can be found any given evening spinning tunes for her kids’ hockey games.

Dr. Alexandra Chow

Dr. Alexandra Chow received her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical Option - Cooperative Program) with Distinction from the University of Alberta in 2012. She obtained her Medical Degree from the University of Alberta in 2016. She completed her General Surgery residency training at the University of Ottawa in 2021 and an Advanced GI MIS/Bariatric Fellowship at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta in 2022.

Dr. Chow holds professional memberships with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

She has been a Clinical Lecturer with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Surgery since February 2023. She has been the Assistant Program Director for the Advanced GI MIS/Bariatric Fellowship at the Royal Alexandra Hospital since September 2023.

Dr. Chow's elective practice includes gallbladder surgery, benign anorectal disease, open and laparoscopic gastrointestinal and hernia surgery. She has a special interest in minimally invasive approaches, foregut surgery and bariatric operations. She also maintains a general endoscopy practice.

Dr. Shaun Cowan

Dr. Shaun Cowan brings over two decades of experience in acute care medicine to his surgical practice at St. Thomas Surgical Clinic in St. Albert. His journey in healthcare began in emergency medical services, followed by a career teaching pre-hospital combat and trauma care through high-fidelity, multimodal simulation. This foundation in high-pressure, real-world medical environments laid the groundwork for his transition into surgery.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Calgary, Dr. Cowan completed his residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alberta. His clinical focus is in acute care surgery and hernia repair, where he is committed to providing timely, evidence-based surgical care with a focus on patient outcomes and system efficiency.

Dr. Cowan is passionate about using advanced simulation to prepare teams and healthcare systems for complex, high-stakes scenarios—an interest that continues to inform his work both inside and outside the operating room.

When not in the hospital, Dr. Cowan enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, whether relaxing at home or sailing on Lake Wabamun and the West Coast. A lifelong learner and enthusiast, he also enjoys time on the sailing VR simulator when he can’t be on the water.

Dr. Suzana Küpper

Dr. Kupper has a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with Distinction and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alberta. She completed a 5 year residency in general surgery at the University of Alberta and went on to complete a 2 year fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Kupper is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Surgery.

Dr. Kupper's oncology practice includes thyroid cancer, breast cancer, melanoma and colon cancer. She also maintains a general surgery practice including endoscopy, gallbladder and hernia surgery as well as acute care/emergency general surgery.


Dr. Dereck Mok

Dr. Mok is a Royal College of Surgeons of Canada certified general surgeon with extensive experience in a broad range of surgical procedures, including minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery. Committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care, Dr. Mok focuses on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, hernias, gallbladder, skin and soft tissue, and more.

Dr. Mok earned both his medical degree and completed general surgery residency at the University of Alberta. During this time he also completed a Masters of Experimental Surgery researching islet cell xenotransplantation. With a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and surgical innovation, Dr. Mok remains committed to continuing education and regularly participates in advanced surgical training.

Dr. Mok practiced in Grande Prairie, AB while providing surgical outreach services to High Level and Mclennan for 12 years prior to relocating to St. Albert in 2023.

Dr. Mok is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. Under his direct supervision are undergraduate medical students, general surgery residents and rural surgical fellows learning skills and knowledge to become our next generation of physicians and surgeons.

Dr. Mok works closely with patients to ensure they understand their treatment options and receive high-quality care from consultation through recovery. Whether managing acute surgical needs or elective procedures, Dr. Mok is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes with a personalized approach.

Dr. Naureen Wasey

Dr. Wasey received her Bachelor of Science with Honours (Microbiology) at the University of Toronto, Trinity College, in 1995. She obtained her medical degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1999. She completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Alberta in 2004.

Dr. Wasey holds a professional membership with the Royal College of Physicians Surgeons of Canada. She is a Clinical Lecturer with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Surgery.

Dr. Wasey's elective practice has transitioned to focus on malignant and benign breast conditions. However, she continues to treat hernias, gallbladder disease, and minor surgical procedures. She works on-call at the Sturgeon Community Hospital dealing with a broad spectrum of emergency surgical diseases.
